Elena Nikolaevna Shadrina

Elena N. Shadrina was born in Lesnaya, a tiny village situated on the northwest coastline of the Kamchatka Peninsula, on May 19, 1973. She lived in Kamchatka until she entered university in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk. She graduated from the Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law with a diploma in Economics in 1995. In 1999, she defended her postgraduate thesis on the theme of Russia’s foreign economic policy transformation in the post-Soviet period.

Since 1995, she has subsequently worked as lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and vice-dean of Science and International Academic Cooperation Affairs at the International Economic Relations Faculty in Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law.

In 2001, she came to Japan under the Obuchi Fellowship Program. During her stay, she was mainly focusing her studies on aspects of Russian-Japanese bilateral trade. Having finished the program, she returned to Khabarovsk, worked there for one year, and the returned to Japan again, this time as a fellow of the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA). She examined the topic of energy cooperation in Northeast Asia through an assessment of the overall environment for multilateral energy cooperation between the states concerned. In particular, she analyzed the conditions and priorities of the various national energy strategies, and suggested avenues to further intra-regional energy cooperation. After completion of her Tokyo-based program, she returned to Russia once again, and continued to perform her duties at the Khabarovsk State Academy of Economics and Law.

In 2005, she came to Japan a third time to pursue her doctoral studies at Niigata University, with which she remains affiliated at the present time. She continues to probe into the field of multilateral energy cooperation, considering it the most promising way to develop links within Northeast Asia.

Thus being involved in energy issues, she naturally gravitated toward the realms of West Asian and Central Asian studies as well. For this reason, she joined the Shingetsu Institute for the Study of Japanese-Islamic Relations in April 2006. She has also been a member of the Association for Japan Sea Rim Studies since October 2005.

Currently, Ms. Shadrina lives in Niigata and devotes herself to her studies and to her part-time job at the Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia (ERINA). As she will complete her doctoral course in March 2009, she is thinking seriously about where her experience and knowledge can best be applied, and therefore she is open to suggestions about academic cooperation.
