ASSISTANCE FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN TAJIKISTAN
April 11, 2007
On
the 11th of April (Wednesday), the Government of Japan
and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance
totaling 1,095,038.62 US dollars (approximately 127.02
million yen), through the Trust Fund for Human Security
to a project entitled “Community development through
employment creation and improved migration management”
that will be implemented by International Labour Organization
(ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
in the Republic of Tajikistan.
Following
the massive displacement of people in search of work abroad
due to the civil war in the late 1990s, Tajikistan is
now faced with problems such as women and children left
behind with lack of sufficient income and human rights
abuses and forced labor towards Tajik migrant workers
abroad. This projects aims to improve the overall situation
in the Rasht district in Tajikistan by improving the livelihood
of people through the promotion of income-generating and
other activities. The following activities will be implemented.
--
Empowering the people in the Rasht district through vocational
training and income-generating measures;
--
Enhancing capacity of government and social partners to
protect Tajik migrant workers from labor rights abuses
abroad and to promote decent employment at home;
--
Providing better access to information and legal redress
mechanisms to migrant workers from the Rasht district,
including victims of trafficking.
This
project is expected to protect the migrant workers in
the Rasht district from different problems of migration
and ensure the sustainable development in the district.
