The
following announcements have appeared on the MOFA website in
recent days in regard to the most recent July 17th earthquake
and tsunami in Indonesia, as well as the May 27th quake near
Yogyakarta.
EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO INDONESIA
July 18, 2006
1)
On July 18, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency
assistance in kind (tents, sleeping mats, blankets, simplified
water tanks, water purifiers, polyethylene containers, plastic
sheets), equivalent to about 13 million yen (including freight
cost) to the Government of Indonesia, in respect to an earthquake
in the Indian Ocean and the resulting large-scale tsunami hitting
the Southwest coast of Java Island.
2)
According to the announcement by the Government of Indonesia,
this earthquake and resulting tsunami caused more than 300 people
died and more than 30,000 in missing, thereof, which figures
will possibly be worsened.
3)
Under these circumstances in which many of the victims are forced
to lead a difficult life, the Government of Indonesia has requested
the Government of Japan an emergency assistance.
4)
The Government of Japan extending heartfelt sympathy to the
victims, has decided to provide this emergency assistance from
a humanitarian point of view and taking account of the friendly
relations between Japan and Indonesia.
MESSAGES OF SYMPATHY
July 19, 2006
1)
On July 18, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi expressed sympathy
to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for the loss of many lives
in the large-scale tsunami that hit the southwest coast of Java,
caused by an earthquake which occurred on July 17 (Mon), saying
that he hoped quick recovery and rehabilitation for all the
victims. Prime Minister Koizumi also conveyed in his message
that the Government of Japan decided on the same day to extend
emergency assistance in kind equivalent to about 13 million
yen and that he would spare no effort in extending utmost assistance
in the future.
2)
Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Aso sent a similar message
to Minister of Foreign Affairs Noer Hasan Wirajuda on July 19.
SURVEY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES DAMAGED BY EARTHQUAKE
IN YOGYAKARTA AND CENTRAL JAVA
July 19, 2006
1)
Jointly with the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Foundation,
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will conduct a disaster damage
survey of cultural heritage sites in the wake of the earthquake
that occurred on May 27, 2006 in central Java, Republic of Indonesia.
2)
This survey, in response to a request from the Government of
Indonesia, will cover the Prambanan Temple Compounds (UNESCO
World Heritage) and other damaged cultural heritage sites in
Yogyakarta city and its suburbs. The survey team will also have
consultations with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and other
relevant organizations on the rehabilitation and restoration
of these cultural heritage sites.
