JAPANESE TRADE WITH THE ISLAMIC WORLD IN 2005

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has released its report on Japan’s trade statistics for 2005. We will examine these statistics in order to discover what we can learn about Japanese trade with the Islamic world.

What we find is that Japan exports 7.3% of its goods (in terms of value) to Islamic countries and Israel, and it imports 24.5% of its goods. Of course, the lion’s share of those Japanese imports consists of oil and gas -- and 2005 was a year in which oil prices skyrocketed.

Some of the most eye-catching statistics are to be found in Japan’s trade with the Persian Gulf states. The value of imports from Saudi Arabia, for example, rose more than 55% over the 2004 figure -- that’s some growth! As we have already reported in the Shingetsu Newsletter, Saudi Arabia re-emerged as Japan’s top supplier of oil in 2005, surpassing the United Arab Emirates for the first time in twenty years.

The units given here are millions of US dollars. The percentages in the parentheses show the growth / loss rate since 2004. Share of Exports / Imports refers to the overall proportion of Japanese global trade. Countries and regions are categorized in the same manner as found on the “Bilateral Relations” section of the Shingetsu webpage. Countries with very small amounts of Japanese trade were not listed in the report, and so they are not listed here either:
