ISLAM
IN JAPAN: ADVERSITY AND DIVERSITY
Shingetsu
Newsletter No. 108
of last November carried a call for papers from Harvard
Asia Quarterly in regard to a submission on the subject
of Islam in Japan. As I mentioned at the time, I myself sent
in a proposal.
It
turned out that I was fortunate enough to have my paper proposal
accepted, and the relevant volume has just been published:
Harvard
Asia Quarterly
Islam in Asia
Vol. X, No. 1 (Winter 2006)
My
paper, entitled “Islam in Japan: Adversity and Diversity,”
is included in this volume, as are articles on Islam in Korea,
Islam in China, and an interview with Michael Laffan, among
other things.
The
paper I wrote was intended to be a general introduction to the
subject of Muslim life in Japan, and is not the product of any
intensive research in primary sources. My goal was to be readable
and interesting, and you can judge for yourselves to what degree
I may have succeeded or failed in that endeavor:

Presumably, the printed edition of the journal will be available
very soon, if it is not in fact available now.
