DOHA BANK WANTS TO BE JAPAN’S “GATEWAY TO THE MIDDLE EAST”

Several media articles -- including one in the Wall Street Journal -- have featured interviews with Doha Bank Deputy Chief Executive Officer Raghavan Seetharaman. It will be recalled that Doha Bank became the only West Asian financial institution to have a Tokyo branch in January of this year (see Shingetsu Newsletter No. 494). Mr. Seetharaman is now telling the press, “We want to be the gateway to the Middle East for Japanese companies.” He is also trying to tie up with Japanese banks on projects like project finance, Islamic banking, carbon-credit emissions trading, and sustained loans. Doha Bank has profited in recent years from higher income due to oil prices and is studying how they can participate in the Japanese market.

Most of Seetharaman’s comments were apparently made at a seminar held in Tokyo on the 22nd called “GCC Economic Trends and Business Opportunities.” This seminar was organized by Doha Bank itself.
