Sandra R. Leavitt

 


Sandra R. Leavitt is a political scientist who specializes in the social mobilization of non-state actors as they engage or challenge the state, including peaceful protest movements, organized crime, insurgencies, and terrorism. While Thailand is Dr. Leavitt’s primary country of research, she has experience in Southeast Asia more broadly.

Dr. Leavitt has over seventeen years of experience in conference management, program management, and program development in higher education; international education; and government-community collaboration. She has led study tours and curriculum development initiatives to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and China. She has extensive experience in developing educational outreach for the community, K-12 teachers, and business leaders.

Dr. Leavitt holds a PhD in Government (Comparative Politics major and International Relations minor) from Georgetown University (2007) and an MA in Southeast Asia Studies from Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (2001). She also earned a BS in Speech Communication with focus on small-group and intercultural communication from Oregon State University (1986).

She is an avid road cyclist and mountain biker, gardener, and birder. She enjoys hiking, camping, weightlifting, and playing squash, as well as collecting fabrics from throughout Asia.
